He recollects everything through his eyes and his memory, though some points may be vague because of his lack of survival necessities, along with partial insanity through the duration of this event. The entire story is told through is first-person point of view. The main character, Scotty Weems, is also the narrator of the work. The title of the book parallels with the entire book, in that the main characters of the book have been trapped inside the school because of a catastrophic blizzard for an extended period of time, lacking main utilities and necessities for survival. Northrop has written three other books (“Gentlemen”, “Plunked”, “Rotten”), and is about to release his fourth, “Surrounded by Sharks.” The authors’ style varies, but Trapped and Surrounded by Sharks use a similar premise of survival and mystery together. The purpose of this piece of work is to entertain the reader, coinciding with a very well done visualizing aspect. (Feb.“Trapped” by Michael Northrop is a survival fiction book intended for the 9-12 grade level reader. Northrop's solid storytelling should keep readers rapt. He tells readers early on that "not all of us made it," so the surprise is less that things keep going wrong than how they do. The problems are expected-darkness, infighting, jealousy, illness, hunger-but conveyed with a tight sense of realism through Scotty's narrative voice. As the snow piles up to over 10 feet, the captive students do their best to survive and wait for help. They're already out of cellphone range, and when the power goes out, all hope of communicating with the outside world is lost.
